Active English is an approach for teaching grammatical understanding to primary-aged pupils. It uses the principles of mnemonics to teach and embed the learning in an active and engaging way, providing the pupils with a deeper grasp of language that will benefit them for life.
The approach has been developed by staff at Witham St Hughs Academy in Lincoln and has been delivered to pupils within the academy and beyond, with impressive results.
Last year, the programme was introduced into a neighbouring school to help improve its SPAG results. The table below shows the impact the approach had.
|The percentage of pupils at Key Stage 2 attaining:|
|Level 3 or below||Level 4 or above||Level 5|
Active English staff training is most effective when it is delivered as a whole-day INSET to all teachers and teaching assistants together. This allows the practice to be applied consistently across the school and embedded into the school culture. We also offer the training as two twilight sessions.
Alongside the programme’s comprehensive training materials, schools can also access classroom resource packs including flash cards, SMART images and bespoke exercise books. Follow-up visits and support is also available to schools where needed.
Our training has been overwhelmingly positively received with the following comments made on our feedback forms:
"Informative and interesting and it gave us an excellent platform to develop our SPAG work."
"A brilliant idea that has been clearly thought through."
