Active English is a whole-school support package for the teaching of grammar, writing and punctuation. It is largely aimed at years 1 to 4, but the elements can be used flexibly across all year groups to meet the needs of pupils. What is important, is that there is a whole-school approach, with all teachers and teaching assistants being supported to implement the programme consistently across the school. It uses the principles of mnemonics to embed learning in an active and engaging way, providing pupils with a deeper grasp of language that serves as a foundation for their future.
The approach has been developed by staff at Witham St Hughs Academy in Lincoln and has been delivered to pupils within the academy and beyond, with impressive results.
Last year, the programme was introduced into a neighbouring school to help improve its SPAG results. The table below shows the impact the approach had.
|The percentage of pupils at Key Stage 2 attaining:|
|Level 3 or below||Level 4 or above||Level 5|
Active English staff training is most effective when it is delivered as a whole-day INSET to all teachers and teaching assistants together. This allows the practice to be applied consistently across the school and embedded into the school culture. We also offer the training as two twilight sessions.
Alongside the programme’s comprehensive training materials, schools can also access classroom resource packs including flash cards, SMART images and bespoke exercise books. Follow-up visits and support is also available to schools where needed.
Our training has been overwhelmingly positively received with the following comments made on our feedback forms:
"Informative and interesting and it gave us an excellent platform to develop our SPAG work."
"A brilliant idea that has been clearly thought through."
"I can't wait to get started and see the impact with my own class!"
The next open morning to see Active English in action at Witham St Hughs academy is:

Twilight training for Active English would be suitable for any NQTs or new members of staff that have joined your school this year. The cost of the twilight top up training is £50.00 per delegate and is held at Manor Farm Academy or Witham St Hughs Academy.
Equate TSA is committed to providing high quality training for the Active English programme that is proven to have positive impact on pupil outcomes for grammar and punctuation. For the programme to be effective, schools should ensure that the programme is incorporated into a whole-school approach and that all staff are appropriately trained.
The whole-school cost for the training package, as either an INSET day or as two twilights is from £1 800
