Word Power with Kelly Ashley

With nearly 20 years of experience in education, Kelly Ashley has enjoyed teaching, leadership, research and advisory roles in both England and America. With an MA in Education – Primary Reading Specialist – from East Carolina University, USA and an MA in Educational Leadership and Change Management from York St John University, she has firm roots in educational research, offering evidence-based, primary English professional development for schools, TSAs, MATs and Local Authorities. She is currently working with several organisations in the North of England in the development and delivery of projects funded through the DFE’s Strategic School Improvement Fund (SSIF). She continues to provide bespoke school support and training as an independent primary English specialist, with a particular interest in language, vocabulary development and reading.

How can teachers effectively develop pupils’ ‘Word power’ to improve reading, writing and communication, supporting pupils to develop ‘word attack’ skills as they encounter new language? ‘Powerful vocabulary instruction’ increases pupils’ EXPOSURE to words in a language-rich environment and utilises effective approaches for DIRECT TEACHING of vocabulary.  Kelly Ashley’s ‘Word Power’ CPD programme provides practical advice on how to translate vocabulary research into everyday classroom practice, investigating key themes in ‘Bringing Words to Life’ (Beck et al.) and the recent ‘Improving Literacy’ guidance from the EEF.  Kelly Ashley has 20 years of experience in education and has enjoyed teaching, leadership, research and advisory roles in both England and the USA. Kelly has delivered her ‘Word Power’ CPD programme to over 50 primary schools in Yorkshire, the North East and London.  She has collaborated with Huntington Research School to explore vocabulary development at the transition between primary and secondary. ‘Word Power’ has been delivered as a core CPD programme for two DFE-funded Strategic School Improvement Fund (SSIF) projects.  Kelly has recently written about ‘Word Power’ for the Chartered College (summer 2018 edition of ‘Impact’) and her first book, WordPowerLeague, is due for publication in early 2019.
